Everyone wants to be a safe driver, but many people find themselves distracted behind the wheel on occasion. There are times when it’s safer to pull over in order to accomplish a task than to attempt it while driving. We have compiled a list of five of these reasons to pull over.

  1. Text or Talk on the Phone: The idea is that you need to focus on what you are doing, which is driving. You should even avoid using a hands-free phone while driving. Pull over to make a call or check the upcoming weather conditions. Pull over to text. Using the phone to talk or text has been the cause of a significant number of accidents and you don't want to be the next one.

  2. Program Your GPS: Programming your GPS will take your focus off the road and may result in you having an accident. Have someone else in the car program the GPS for you or pull over to do it. It is never a good idea to try to multitask while driving.

  3. Rest: Summer vacations often mean long road trips. Driving when you are tired is dangerous. Pull over to switch drivers periodically to prevent driver fatigue. If you are driving alone, then pull over to take a break. Get out and stretch your legs or sit in the car and take a nap. If you start to feel tired while you are driving, make sure you stop before you have an accident.

  4. Weather: You are probably trying to get to your destination at a certain time when all the sudden it is raining so hard you can't see the road. Even though your trip will be delayed, it is wise to pull off the road and wait out the storm. Keep in mind that an accident in these weather conditions will delay you even longer.

  5. Car Issues: If your car isn't running properly, pull off the road. The key is to pull far off the road. People sometimes get hit when they aren't far enough off the road. If possible, get off the highway completely and find a safe location to deal with your car repair.

By pulling over if you find yourself in any of these situations this summer, you will be less likely to find yourself in a car accident. Have a safe and fun summer!
